For The Planet
The fashion industry is one of the world's largest polluters, and as it grows, its environmental damage intensifies.
The more we researched, the more motivated we became to create change. There are solutions and alternatives to these issues, and the first step is building awareness and a willingness to act.
We're here to show you the options. After realising the full impact of fashion on our planet, we re-evaluated our operations and moved Koa towards sustainable practices to protect our world and whānau.
We don't want to be another company promising sustainability by some distant date. We can all make a positive impact now. That's why 100% of our products are manufactured sustainably while retaining excellent quality.
We reduce greenhouse gases, decrease landfill waste, and eliminate unnecessary harm to our people and planet.
People. Planet. Product.
Trees for Every Purchase
Excess CO2 is one of the biggest contributors to climate change. The best way to reduce it? Trees.
With every product you purchase, we plant 5 trees through our partner Eden Reforestation in areas of severe deforestation like Nepal, Madagascar, Haiti, Indonesia, and Mozambique.
More trees mean more local employment, declining global warming, and reduced flooding risks.
Product Sold = Trees Planted = Happy Planet
Why Hemp?
Hemp is the rockstar of sustainable fabrics, and we're excited to give it centre stage.
- One of the most versatile plants on the planet — thrives in most conditions
- Incredibly fast growing (reaches full size in 90 days vs 6+ months for cotton)
- Carbon sink — removes roughly 11 tonnes of CO2 per hectare annually, more than trees
- Grows without pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides
- Regenerates and purifies soil
- Requires very little water compared to cotton or linen
Organic Materials
We only use organic materials because chemicals used in non-organic production damage the environment and cause serious illness. Using organic is a win-win.
Why organic?
- Better for you and your skin (no toxic chemicals)
- No pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides — improves land quality and protects health
- Plants fed by rainfall rather than depleting groundwater
- Develops healthy, fertile soil and conserves biodiversity
- Better for farmer health and ensures fairer wages
Recycled Materials
Every second, the equivalent of one rubbish truck of textiles is landfilled or burned. With over 100 billion items produced yearly and 85% ending up in landfills or incineration, there's a massive problem.
Why we use recycled materials:
- Drastically decreases landfill waste
- Recycling 1 million tons of textiles equals removing 500,000 cars from the road
- Reduces plastic bottles and waste in oceans and landfills
- Requires significantly less resources, energy, and water than producing new garments
- Advances recycling technologies as demand increases
Plastic-Free Packaging
The world produces over 300 million tons of plastic yearly, with 50% for single-use purposes. More than 8 million tons end up in our oceans every year.
How we're eliminating plastic waste:
- All clothes come free of packaging (no individual plastic wrapping)
- Recycled poly garments decrease plastic in landfills and oceans
- Your order arrives as-is with no unnecessary packing or tags
- We use compostable packaging and carbon-neutral shipping where available
- All bags are made from recycled plastic and are 100% recyclable
Supporting Communities
Creating a sustainable future requires many hands working together. Through collaborations and charity events, we've supported organisations doing incredible work for people and planet, raising over $15,000 for groups like Eden Reforestation, Sustainable Coastlines, and local community initiatives.
As we grow, we're committed to giving more.
You Can Make a Difference Too
While brands should lead the way, consumers play a big part. In fact, ⅔ of a garment's environmental damage happens after purchase.
Easy steps to reduce your impact:
- Only wash clothes when needed — saves water and energy
- Use gentle cycles and eco-friendly detergents
- Air dry in shade instead of using a dryer — saves energy and extends garment life
- Donate, don't discard — keeps waste from landfills and supports charities
- Choose ethical and sustainable brands
Currently, 75% of textiles are sent to landfill by consumers, 12% are lost during manufacturing, 12% are donated or recycled, and less than 1% are regenerated into new fibre.
Let's change those figures together.
